Our Only Hope

by Pastor Wayne Puls on March 02, 2022

This month we begin our observance of the church-year season of Lent. These forty days, prior to Holy Week and Easter, are a time for spiritual reflection, repentance, and remembrance of the sacrifice of Christ for our sins. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 2, and you are invited to our worship service at 7:00 PM (Imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion). Special midweek Lent services will be held on the five following Wednesdays, at 7:00 PM, along with our regularly-scheduled weekend worship services.

This year’s sermon series theme for Lent is “Joy of the Desolate.” A strange title, yes? But a good one! Spiritually-speaking, we are all desolate of hope, if left to our own devices. Every human is born into sin, afflicted with sin daily, and unable to be rid of sin’s effects. Without God’s mercy and grace, you and I are hopelessly lost, condemned by our own misdeeds and failings. Jesus Christ came to be our Savior from sin, and he is, truly, the “Joy of the Desolate.” Christ is our Redeemer and Rescuer, and our only hope.

Our Lent sermons will explore this theme, using the words of Jesus from John’s Gospel, chapters 14-16. These powerful words were shared by the Lord to his disciples, towards the end of the Last Supper. His messages have tremendous meaning at any point in our lives, but take on special meaning in the context of his Passion.

I invite you to make time for Lent worship and devotion in these solemn, sacred forty days of Lent. May you truly find joy in Jesus, our only hope!
